THE MOST EMBLEMATIC TRENDS OF THE 80S THAT ARE RETURNING TO THE CATWALKWAYS

THE NOSTALGIA IS REAL. Almost every Spring 2021 runway collection had some type of 80s-related piece or trend! The most obvious were Dolce & Gabbana in Milan and Balmain in Paris. But I think since the beginning of 2020 we've been slowly introduced to some 80s trends without even realizing it! First it was chunky jewelry, then padded shoulders on muscle shirts and blazers, puff sleeves, leather accents, late 80s hairstyles with all the hair scrunchies... these are all huge trends in this moment and will continue to be until at least next summer! We also had a metallic wave last spring that, thanks to Isabel Marant's latest collection, I think will come even stronger next year.

HOW ICONIC 80'S ACCESSORIES ENHANCE ANY LOOK

The 1980s stand out for their accessories and therefore 2021 will too. In my opinion, the right accessories have the power to elevate any look. With everything that's been going on this year and the WFM (work from home) wave, there has been a huge increase in demand for loungewear and simple basics. Casual tank tops have gained more popularity this year than any other, and let's not mention sweatshirts! This is why women have come to trust in the art of accessories to improve our looks at home. It's all in the details, right?

Incorporating certain '80s-inspired accessories, like chunky gold jewelry and silk hair scrunchies, into our daily outfits can make a HUGE difference when we want to look more polished, but effortless. If you wear sweats, put on a gold necklace and some gold earrings to immediately look more put together. If you want to wear your hair up, tying it up with a silk scrunchie will make your hairstyle look more elaborate. Some accessories simply have the power to liven up a pint and give us the confidence boost we desperately crave this year.

IRMA LÓPEZ

I love this collection! Even if you're not into '80s style specifically, these pieces are definitely a must-have! They're thick enough to draw attention, but subtle enough if you're looking for a more understated look. It all depends on how you use them and what you combine them with! If I had to pick one, I would say the Classic Links necklace is my favorite because of its versatility. I can see myself wearing this piece every day. On the other hand, chunky charm necklaces are gaining popularity and the Padlock necklace would be perfect for that look. You can also combine it with other necklaces to master that maximalist vibe so iconic from the 80s. As someone who has purchased countless gold accessories over the years, and more specifically this past year due to the huge boom in chunky jewelry, I can assure you that quality is very important. I have had to throw away so many pieces of jewelry because they have changed color after literally just looking at them! So I'm not kidding when I say that "quality over quantity" should be our motto when it comes to jewelry and the GOLD COLLECTION delivers on this.

MEET MARIA CAMILA, ALIAS “HOTMESS INC.”

  • What did you study, and why? I went to fashion marketing school at LaSalle College in Montreal, that's where their main campus is. Halfway through my career I decided to focus on digital marketing, which basically meant I was taking more classes on how to market fashion brands online instead of offline. I guess this path was always a no-brainer for me. I've liked fashion for as long as I can remember, but I was never interested in design as such. I like to use my creative eye on things that are already made! Once I realized that, fashion design was obviously out of the picture. Then I started researching the fashion marketing curriculum and was almost immediately convinced that it was the career for me.
  • In your own words, what is HOTMESS INC all about? I love it when people ask me this question! Let's say Hotmess Inc is literally an online representation of myself. It's a platform that embodies everything that matters to young women, from fashion and beauty to pop culture and humor. Our main goal is to share daily trending updates in an absolutely perfect way. I try to make our content as fun, as relatable, and as enjoyable as possible so that the information doesn't come off as pushy. I want everyone to have access to daily updates without having to go online and spend hours searching for a specific trend or item, all while having fun! I'm proud to have found a way to incorporate this information into my audience's daily routine, which obviously includes browsing Instagram.
  • Favorite fashion principles or aphorisms: "If you like it, wear it." I know it may sound cliché, but as someone who constantly spots trends and shares simple facts with my audience, I like to emphasize that trends are not meant to be followed perfectly. Trends are not rules. Just because something is trending doesn't mean that other things are taboo or frowned upon. If you like something, wear it, regardless of whether it's trending or not. The beauty of fashion is taking a trend and adapting it to your own style or seeing a new trend and deciding “this isn't for me.” This is how new trends are born and others die! You must stay true to yourself about what you like and what you don't. The goal is to dress for ourselves too and not just for other people! So don't go buy something just because I said it was trending, buy it because you really like it and see yourself wearing it.
  • Your experience in the fashion industry, have you worked with any brand, agency or magazine? . I have been doing online marketing for the brand in June and January for the last 4 years. That's where I learned everything I know about the importance of online presence, SEO, and online marketing in general. I also worked as a freelance marketing consultant for the James Perse brand in 2019, they wanted to improve their online presence and give their Canadian market a better online experience, so I worked hand in hand with them to do just that! School taught me a lot, but it wasn't until I entered the real workforce that I learned where my skills are.
